Gopasthmi 8th of Nov 2016

The significance of the festival lies in the fact that this was the day when Lord Krishna was allowed to herd cows as an independent cow herder for the first time by his father Nanda. This year it will be celebrated on Nov 8.

According to many others, the day celebrates the birth of Kamdhenu, the divine cow, during samudra manthan. Kamdhenu is revered in Hindu religion and every part of it signifies an important aspect of the religion. She has been described as a cow that offers her owner everything he desires. All cows are considered an embodiment of the Kamdhenu and this is also a reason why all cows are considered holy and worshipped in the Hindu religion.
